Cross Section of a wall

It is easy to test your house for asbestos, and it will definitely make your future renovation project much safer.

Safety first.  When you take a sample, assume the worst and protect yourself from the potential threat of asbestos. Asbestos is the most toxic when you inhale it. To be safe, you should always wear an N100 or P100 dust mask. If you do not have one, you can buy them in any hardware store.

Collect a sample  (Note: if you are sending Vermiculite Attic insulation, please visit a different page for instructions). Take a small piece of material that you want to test and place it in a Ziploc bag.  You only need approximately 5-20 g of material, about the size of a teaspoon. It does not have to be exact, and it can be either one piece or crumbs. Place the sample into the bag, seal it, and label the bag with a permanent marker. Write something similar to: “Ceiling paint- kids’ bedroom”, or “Yellow flooring from the kitchen”. If you want to test more than one sample, each sample should be placed in a separate bag. Please take as many samples as you need and label each bag.

Keep Records.  Download a “request for analysis form”, and complete your name, phone, and email address. Select how quickly you need your results back as well as list all the samples that you are testing. You can also request an analysis of different layers of the sample, or choose the very sensitive test capable of seeing as low as 0.1% of asbestos in the sample. Please remember to sign and date the form.

NOTE: We encourage residents of Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec to choose “0.1% sensitivity” to comply with your Provincial Asbestos Regulations.

Prepare your samples for shipment.  Place your samples and the signed request form into a large Ziploc bag. Pack your order into a padded envelope or a box, and ship it for laboratory analysis to
